Rescue Renovation’s host, Kayleen McCabe, and her team reached out to Miracle Method to restore a 100 year-old clawfoot bathtub in a historic home in Denver, Colorado. The tub would be the focal point of the show’s bathroom renovation. The episode, titled Dunn Bathroom, premiered in December 2011 and will run throughout 2012. How does bathtub refinishing compare to bathtub liners?

What are your options when your bathtub is UGLY?  Maybe your problems are the tub is hard-to-clean, dull and stained, or just the wrong color.

Bathtub liners, which are sheets of PVC plastic or acrylic that have been molded to the shape of an existing tub and then glued down, are sometimes marketed as an alternative to actually repairing and restoring the bathtub. However, there are quite a few disadvantages that bathtub liners present that consumers should be aware of before making a final decision.

First of all, when you choose a bathtub liner, you must sacrifice the beautiful look of a restored porcelain tub for the look and feel of plastic. Liners are also rather expensive, costing as much as $1,300 – and if you want to add in a wall system, soap dishes, and other similar features, the cost can rise up to $3,000 or more!

Additionally, bathtub liners can develop leaks between the old tub and the liner, which can easily lead to mold and mildew if water penetrates through even the smallest of cracks or seams. They also do wear out over time and must be replaced, which proves to be difficult since the liner is glued into place at the point of installation.

Refinishing, on the other hand, provides you with a like-new look and feel. Refinishing is a much more cost-effective way to restore your bathtub – the cost of refinishing with Miracle Method is generally between $475 and $600, depending on the location and condition of the tub.
