How does bathtub refinishing compare to bathtub liners?

Bathtub liners, which are sheets of PVC plastic or acrylic that have been molded to the shape of an existing tub and then glued down, are sometimes marketed as an alternative to actually repairing and restoring the bathtub. However, there are quite a few disadvantages that bathtub liners present that consumers should be aware of before making a final decision.

First of all, when you choose a bathtub liner, you must sacrifice the beautiful look of a restored porcelain tub for the look and feel of plastic. Liners are also rather expensive, costing as much as $1,300 – and if you want to add in a wall system, soap dishes, and other similar features, the cost can rise up to $3,000 or more!

Additionally, bathtub liners can develop leaks between the old tub and the liner, which can easily lead to mold and mildew if water penetrates through even the smallest of cracks or seams. Miracle Method refinishes ceramic tile in much the same way that we refinish ceramic bathtubs and kitchen countertops.  Painting ceramic tile is completely different from refinishing ceramic tile.  With refinishing, the new finish is actually fused or bonded to the old surface.  Painting ceramic tiles is a cheap solution involvingspray cans of enamel or roll-on epoxies, but the effort is seldom worthwhile.  These epoxies and enamels tend to look somewhat opaque or murky and are textured unlike smooth tile.

Why Bathtub Refinishing is Best Left to the Professionals

Bathtub refinishing requires use of industrial strength chemical and solvents.

Refinishing bathtubs are, in much the same way as we discuss refinishing countertops in a previous post, jobs best left to professionals.

With that in mind, DIY refinishing for a bathtub is almost always a poor choice.  Outside the soul merit that it might be cheaper than a professionally done refinishing, there are many detriments.  In order to refinish a bathtub, you must first fully clean and remove any build-up of mineral deposits, soap scum, body oils, etc., and utilize powerful industrial-strength chemicals that require, at the very least, rubber gloves, goggles, and a breathing respirator,  to ready the tub before any refinishing.

Only after the tub is cleaned and any damage repaired, can you begin refinishing by bonding and priming the entirety of the tub and then applying the topcoat.  If any one of these steps is lax or missing, the refinishing job might as well be scrapped.  Without a proven bonding agent to fuse the new finish onto the old surface, you are really just doing a temporary “paint” job.  Good refinishing requires an effective bonding agent and hi tech acrylic resins to provide the best results.

Bathtub Repair – What Can Be Repaired & How Are Repairs Made?

The award winning refinishing that we at Miracle Method pride ourselves on providing to our customers can be applied to bathtubs and other units made from a variety of materials.  Fiberglass, acrylic, and cultured marble are the primary materials that we can repair, but we also repair porcelain tubs and sinks, tile grout, hot tubs and Jacuzzis.

Fixtures can accidentally be damaged.  This frequently occurs when an item is shipped or installed, or in some cases when a heavy or sharp object is dropped onto the fixture.  While everything else may be in working order and in satisfactory condition, this limited damage needs to be repaired to prevent further damage as a result (cracking or chipping are good examples of this). Sometimes a crack can develop into a leak. The good news is that fixture repair is generally speedy and inexpensive.

A great deal of time and effort goes into Miracle Method’s bathtub repair.  Chips and cracks must first be filed and sealed using a waterproof polyester resin.  Once these areas have completely dried they are thoroughly sanded and filled.  Then, using an artist’s air brush, an acrylic enamel coating is applied to the area, and the area is carefully blended into the surrounding surface, making it look just like new!

Chip and bathtub repair is something that takes years of practice.  DIY repair projects often only cover up damaged areas and don’t extend the life of the unit in the same way that refinishing does.  Chip and bathtub repair requires a discerning eye and years of professional experience.
